February 2 is celebrated as World Wetlands Day, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971.1 In 2023, the theme of the convention was “wetland restoration,” emphasizing the vulnerability of these water-rich ecosystems. Each year, World Wetlands Day has a specific theme, chosen by the Ramsar Secretariat, such as “Wetlands and Water,” “Wetlands for Climate Change Mitigation,” “Wetlands and Biodiversity,” and “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.” These themes reflect shifting global priorities and evolving scientific understanding.
